The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), under Olubunmi Kuku’s leadership, helped drive a $71.6 million inflow into Nigeria’s economy during the 2024/2025 Yuletide season, largely due to increased travel activity and improved airport services
The Nigerian economy experienced a significant boost during the 2024/2025 Yuletide season, with $71.6 million flowing into the country, driven largely by increased travel volumes.
According to Yakubu Dati, former spokesperson for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), much of this success can be credited to the efforts of FAAN Managing Director Olubunmi Kuku and her strategic improvements to airport operations.
In a statement, Dati highlighted the surge in airport activities as Nigeria’s airports handled a diverse range of travelers, including Nigerians in the Diaspora, tourists, holidaymakers, diplomats, and entrepreneurs.
He noted that challenges arising from the high volume of passengers were addressed with marked improvements in efficiency, safety, and customer service, which were widely appreciated by travelers.
The period also coincided with significant cultural and entertainment events in Lagos, including the Greater Lagos Fiesta, Mrs. Universe Africa, and Rhythm Unplugged.
These events helped to promote Nigerian arts and culture globally, further contributing to the country’s economic growth.
Dati commended Kuku’s leadership for the operational enhancements she has brought to Nigeria’s airports, turning them into hubs of efficiency and safety.
These improvements have not only created a more pleasant travel experience but also played a vital role in achieving the country’s economic targets.
He emphasized that the $71.6 million economic inflow generated during the Detty December period was a clear indicator of the impact of these efforts.
Kuku’s leadership, characterized by a strong focus on technology integration, customer service, and airport security, has been crucial in ensuring the smooth handling of the high demand during the busy holiday season.
The changes implemented under her watch included enhanced passenger amenities, such as upgraded restrooms and food courts, which improved the overall airport experience for travelers.
Dati further noted that Kuku’s meticulous planning and mobilization of resources were key to managing the holiday period successfully, ensuring a positive travel experience for passengers and contributing to Nigeria’s economic growth.
As FAAN continues to make strides in enhancing Nigeria’s aviation sector, Dati highlighted how the improvements led by Kuku have positioned the agency to contribute to Nigeria’s $1 billion economy target set by President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
He expressed confidence that the continued focus on airport efficiency and service delivery will further boost the country’s economic trajectory in the coming years.
Kuku’s leadership, which has significantly transformed Nigeria’s airports, is seen as a model for the growth and development of the aviation sector, not only improving the passenger experience but also driving broader economic benefits.
