President hails FCCPC chief’s decades of public service, journalism and contributions to governance as he marks his 65th birthday
President Bola Tinubu has paid glowing tribute to the Executive Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), Tunji Bello, on his 65th birthday, describing him as a dependable ally whose decades of service have left a lasting mark on journalism, governance and Nigeria’s progressive movement.

In a goodwill message marking Bello’s birthday, the President reflected on more than three decades of political association and democratic activism, saying the FCCPC chief had consistently demonstrated loyalty, integrity and exceptional public service throughout his career.
“I rejoice with Tunji Bello, as my dependable friend, brother and long-standing ally in the progressive movement, attains 65,” Tinubu said.
The President recalled that both men worked together during Nigeria’s pro-democracy struggle in the 1990s, when many journalists and political activists opposed military rule and campaigned for the restoration of democratic governance.
According to Tinubu, Bello distinguished himself during that period as a fearless journalist committed to defending democratic values before later transitioning into public service.
The President said Bello’s career, which has spanned journalism, state administration and federal leadership, reflects what can be achieved through competence, creativity and strong character.
“As his sterling record clearly illustrates, first as editor of reputable national dailies, later as a Lagos State cabinet member, and most recently as the CEO of the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission, Tunji is a shining example of what is possible when competence meets creativity and character,” he said.
Tinubu also recounted Bello’s role in transforming waste management during his administration as Governor of Lagos State, describing the appointment as a pivotal decision in addressing one of the state’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The President said he invited Bello into government in 2003 to help implement reforms after recognising his leadership qualities beyond journalism.
“True to his reputation, Tunji performed a miracle in a record time, so much so that successive governors found him indispensable and retained him either as Environment Commissioner to consolidate the gains in waste management in Africa’s most populous city or as the Secretary to the State Government.”
Bello served under successive Lagos State administrations in key positions, including Commissioner for the Environment and Secretary to the State Government, before his appointment to lead the FCCPC.
Tinubu further praised Bello’s broad professional background, noting that his experience in political science, law, administration and strategic communication had made him one of Lagos State’s most accomplished public servants.
Explaining his decision to appoint Bello to head the consumer protection agency, the President said he wanted a trusted and experienced administrator capable of strengthening consumer advocacy under the Renewed Hope Agenda.
“When I assumed office as President and considered how to recalibrate consumer advocacy in line with our Renewed Hope Agenda, I could not think of a more appropriate and reliable person than Tunji.”
The President added that Bello had justified the confidence placed in him by improving the performance of the FCCPC since assuming office.
“Many Nigerians will attest that he has made a great impact at the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission within two years of assuming leadership of this strategic public institution, tasked with ensuring fair play in the marketplace and protecting Nigerian consumers,” Tinubu said.
Established under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act of 2018, the FCCPC is Nigeria’s principal competition and consumer protection regulator.
The commission is responsible for promoting fair competition, preventing anti-competitive practices and safeguarding consumers from unfair business conduct.
Concluding his tribute, Tinubu thanked Bello for his contributions to Nigeria and the progressive movement while offering prayers for his continued health and service.
“I cannot thank Tunji enough for all he has done for our country and the progressive front.
