The country music legend leaves behind a six-decade legacy spanning chart-topping songs, film, business and philanthropy
Country music icon Dolly Parton died at the age of 80 on Tuesday, August 25, 2026, after a six-decade career that transformed her from a child performer raised in poverty in rural Tennessee into one of the world’s most recognisable entertainers, songwriters and philanthropists. Her death was announced by her nephew, Bryan Seaver, in an emotional video shared on Instagram.

The news of Dolly Parton Dies at 80 marks the end of an extraordinary career that produced enduring songs including Jolene, 9 to 5 and I Will Always Love You, while also establishing Parton as a successful actress, entrepreneur and champion of childhood literacy.
Seaver, who had served as Parton’s head of security for more than two decades, said announcing her death was an honour overshadowed by profound sadness.
“It is an honour, an honour that is mixed with absolute pride and great sadness,” he said in the family announcement. (Reddit)
Parton’s death came after months of health concerns that had increasingly limited her public appearances.
She postponed a planned Las Vegas residency in 2025, while recent reports said she had been dealing with health problems she had previously neglected while caring for her husband, Carl Dean, who died in March 2025 at the age of 82. (People.com)
Born on January 19, 1946, in a two-room log cabin near the Little Pigeon River in Tennessee, Parton was the fourth of 12 children.
Her father, a sharecropper who later owned a small tobacco farm, struggled financially to support the large family.
Parton frequently recalled her childhood as one of extreme poverty, but she also credited her parents with giving her the foundations that shaped her life.
Her mother passed on traditional folk music and storytelling, while her father instilled a strong work ethic.
She began performing as a child and was appearing on local radio and television by the age of 13.
That same year, she performed at the Grand Ole Opry in Nashville and recorded her first single, Puppy Love.
After graduating from high school in 1964, Parton moved to Nashville the following day to pursue music. Her songwriting abilities soon attracted attention, eventually leading to her debut album, Hello, I’m Dolly, in 1967.
That year also marked the beginning of her association with country star Porter Wagoner, who invited her to join The Porter Wagoner Show.
Their professional partnership produced a string of successful recordings and helped introduce Parton to a wider country audience.
Parton eventually decided to pursue a solo career. In 1973, she wrote I Will Always Love You as a farewell to Wagoner as their professional relationship changed.
The song became one of Parton’s signature recordings and achieved another level of global fame when Whitney Houston recorded it for the 1992 film The Bodyguard.
Parton also wrote Jolene during the same period, with both songs appearing on her acclaimed 1974 album of the same name.
Her 1977 album Here You Come Again became her first million-selling record and earned her first Grammy Award.
Her success soon extended beyond music.
In 1980, Parton made her film debut alongside Jane Fonda and Lily Tomlin in the workplace comedy 9 to 5.
She wrote and performed the film’s title song, which became a number-one hit and earned an Academy Award nomination.
She subsequently appeared in films including The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, Steel Magnolias and Joyful Noise, building a screen career that complemented her standing as one of country music’s biggest stars.

Parton’s business interests were equally ambitious.
She became closely associated with Dollywood, the Tennessee theme park she acquired an interest in and renamed in 1986, while also developing television projects, food products and other commercial ventures.
Her influence extended well beyond entertainment.
Through the Dollywood Foundation’s Imagination Library, Parton championed childhood literacy by providing books to children.
The programme eventually expanded internationally and became one of the most recognisable elements of her philanthropic legacy.

Parton also supported medical research, disaster relief and other charitable causes.
Her contribution to Covid-19 research became particularly prominent after she donated $1 million to Vanderbilt University Medical Center, helping support research connected to the development of the Moderna vaccine. (The Guardian)
In 2022, Parton received the Carnegie Medal of Philanthropy, recognising her longstanding contribution to charitable causes.
“I just give from my heart. I never know what I’m going to do or why I’m gonna do it. I just see a need and if I can fill it, then I will,” she said at the time.
Her personal life also became a source of public fascination, particularly her enduring marriage to Dean. The couple married in 1966 and remained together for almost six decades until his death in 2025.
Parton’s passing therefore closes a remarkable chapter in American popular culture.
From the modest beginnings of a girl growing up in rural Tennessee, she became the “Queen of Country”, selling more than 100 million records worldwide, earning numerous honours and writing more than 3,000 songs. (The Guardian)
Yet her legacy extends beyond commercial success. Parton used her fame to support literacy, healthcare, disaster relief and communities in need, ensuring that her influence reached far beyond the stage.
For generations of listeners, her distinctive voice, vivid storytelling and unmistakable personality made her music instantly recognisable.
For those who encountered her work through film, television or philanthropy, she became something broader: a cultural figure whose optimism and generosity became as important to her legacy as her music.

Parton’s death leaves an extraordinary body of work behind, but also a philanthropic tradition that is likely to continue touching lives long after her final performance.
