FAAN Cashless Payment system rolls out nationwide on 28 February 2026, enhancing transparency, revenue assurance, and airport service delivery
Mrs. Olubunmi Kuku, Managing Director of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to fully implement a cashless payment system at all airport payment points nationwide, effective 28 February 2026.
The announcement followed a visit by executives and members of the National Union of Air Transport Employees, who sought clarification on FAAN’s decision to discontinue cash transactions across airport facilities.
According to Mr. Henry Agbebire, FAAN’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, the engagement provided an opportunity for extensive dialogue and highlighted the authority’s open-door policy and dedication to inclusive stakeholder consultation.
In her remarks, Kuku stressed that the transition to cashless payments aligns with global best practices in aviation management and supports the Federal Government’s efforts to enhance transparency, accountability, and operational efficiency in public finance.
She cited a Treasury Circular dated 24 November 2025, signed by Accountant-General Shamseldeen Ogunjimi and approved by the Federal Executive Council, directing all ministries, departments, and agencies to discontinue physical cash collections.
“There is no going back on this decision,” Kuku emphasised, adding that the initiative is central to strengthening revenue assurance, improving service delivery, and ensuring operational integrity across Nigeria’s airports.
Beyond regulatory compliance, the FAAN chief described the reform as a strategic move to reduce financial leakages, improve transaction traceability, and accelerate service delivery.
She said the cashless system would boost public confidence in airport operations by providing clear audit trails and tighter financial controls.
Addressing concerns over the use of Paystack as a payment platform, Kuku clarified that the company serves solely as a gateway.
All payments made via Point of Sale terminals are remitted directly into designated Federal Government accounts, and no revenues are held in third-party accounts.
The NUATE delegation was briefed comprehensively on the implementation framework ahead of the 28 February deadline.
Union representatives reportedly expressed satisfaction with the explanations, describing the system as practical and workable.
The nationwide rollout of cashless transactions marks a milestone in FAAN’s ongoing modernisation agenda.
As Nigeria’s aviation sector evolves, the authority maintains that enhanced financial controls and digital payment systems are essential to improving efficiency, safeguarding revenue, and embedding transparency across airport operations.
