Yaba College of Technology, led by Prof. Funsho Afolabi, highlighted its commitment to professionalism in tourism and a sustainable blue economy during the 2024 United Nations World Tourism Day celebration.
Themed ‘Tourism and Peace,’ the event emphasised tourism’s role in fostering peace and supporting Nigeria’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
The Chairman of the Governing Council at Yaba College of Technology, Prof. Funsho Afolabi, reaffirmed the institution’s dedication to promoting professionalism in tourism and fostering a sustainable blue economy in line with the federal government’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda.’
Afolabi made this statement at the 2024 United Nations World Tourism Day celebration, themed *Tourism and Peace*, held at the college’s Tourism Village in Epe.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Afolabi emphasised that by hosting the celebration, Yaba College of Technology had established a platform for intellectual discourse, cultural displays, and interactive activities aimed at linking tourism with peace.
He highlighted the role of the college’s Department of Tourism Management Technology (TMT) in helping to fulfil President Bola Tinubu’s ‘Renewed Hope Agenda’ by contributing to sustainable tourism practices.
Prof. Afolabi also explained various types of tourism, including domestic, inbound, and outbound, noting that the institution, in collaboration with the Nigerian Tourism Development Authority (NTDA), is aligning with United Nations guidelines on tourism statistics.
He stressed that the Department of Tourism Management Technology actively supports the United Nations World Tourism Organisation’s mission, promoting peace through education.
Rector of Yaba College, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, in his remarks, underscored the importance of tourism in fostering understanding, peace, and global cooperation.
He urged participants to reflect on the environmental and cultural impact of tourism and to promote sustainable, responsible travel.
Dr. Oluwatoyin Adedayo, Head of the Department of Tourism Management Technology, further highlighted the relevance of the theme, stating that tourism plays a vital role in promoting peaceful coexistence between cultures.
She reaffirmed the department’s commitment to nurturing future tourism professionals who will shape Nigeria’s tourism sector.
Chief Folorunsho Coker, Director General of NTDA, represented by Mrs. Alice Adesola, explained the significant economic benefits of tourism, emphasising its sustainability as a national industry.
She encouraged students to consider tourism as a promising career path, reinforcing the connection between peace, tourism, and national progress.
