Ogun Onire Festival in Ire-Ekiti draws global visitors in a joyful cultural celebration, boosting tourism and showcasing Nigeria’s rich heritage
Ogun Onire Festival brought a wave of joy, color, and cultural pride to the ancient town of Ire-Ekiti on Sunday, August 3rd, as thousands of celebrants gathered to honor one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional events.
The town, located in Oye Local Government Area of Ekiti State, buzzed with life as indigenes, non-indigenes, and international tourists poured in for the Ogun Onire Festival, a yearly event that celebrates Ogun—the spiritual father of Ire.
From the rhythmic beating of drums to the vibrant display of traditional attire, every street corner came alive with energy. The atmosphere was electrified by dancing, singing, dining, and even ceremonial gun salutes, showcasing the festival’s power to unite and uplift.
Speaking at the event, the Onire of Ire-Ekiti, Oba (Dr) Victor Adeleke Bobade, described the festival as more than tradition—calling it a divine mandate and a global attraction. “Ogun made Ire,” he said. “This is not just cultural. This is spiritual and international.”
He emphasized how the Ogun Onire Festival has evolved into a full-fledged tourism event, now recognized as the World Ogun Onire Festival.
He appealed to the state and federal governments to invest in its promotion to further elevate Ire-Ekiti as a global cultural destination.
Ekiti State’s Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, Prof. Rasaki Ojo Bakare, echoed the monarch’s sentiments. He noted that cultural tourism, particularly through festivals like Ogun Onire, is vital to the state’s economy, spiritual wellness, and social harmony.
“This is no longer a local event,” the Commissioner said. “Thousands of people are already coming here—domestic and international tourists alike. Ogun Onire Festival is already happening on a global scale.”
Hotels were fully booked, homes were filled, and the town’s economy enjoyed a welcome boost.
President of the Ire-Ekiti Progressive Union, Engr. Ayodeji Abe, praised the unifying power of the festival, saying, “There is a spirit behind Ogun Onire. It brings blessings and unity.”
With its deep-rooted traditions, spiritual significance, and growing international appeal, the Ogun Onire Festival is now positioned as a crown jewel of Nigeria’s cultural tourism landscape.
