A coalition of indigenous maritime tourism and transport investors has pledged to unlock strategic investment opportunities to develop Nigeria’s inland waterways, aiming to benefit littoral communities in Lagos and across the country.

The Chairman of the group, Allied Concessionaires and Blue Economy Alliance, Bolaji Olasade, made the announcement during a courtesy visit to the Lagos Area Manager of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Engineer Sarat Braimah.

Olasade explained that the alliance comprises experienced maritime tourism and transportation operators committed to redefining waterfront recreation and hospitality by integrating safe and efficient water transport systems.

“We are a consortium of credible operators, mostly concessionaires, ready to collaborate with NIWA to grow inland waterways tourism infrastructure and promote resorts in littoral communities,” he said.

The coalition’s Secretary, Barrister Dorcas Aderemi, emphasised that the Nigerian marine and blue economy sector can only thrive when the inland waterways ecosystem is strategically aligned to attract sustainable investment.

She called for a structured public-private partnership between the private sector and NIWA to accelerate development and increase waterways utilisation.

The group commended Engineer Braimah for her leadership, highlighting her zero-tolerance stance on boat accidents and security breaches on Lagos waterways.

Responding to the delegation, Engineer Braimah welcomed their interest and assured that NIWA would communicate the proposals to its headquarters in Abuja.

“We recognise that NIWA cannot achieve its mandate alone. Serious private-sector investors are essential to the development of the industry,” she said.

Braimah also highlighted the need to modernise inland water transport by introducing new boats and ferries to improve safety, efficiency, and value across transportation and hospitality sectors.
