Nigeria’s Blue Economy Policy has taken center stage as experts at the Blue Economy Academy (BEA) urge immediate and coordinated action to unlock the nation’s massive maritime potential.

At its inaugural virtual “CODE BLUE  Nigeria’s Monthly Ocean Intelligence Brief” on July 29, 2025, BEA founder Mr. Ubong Essien stressed that the country continues to suffer from “sea blindness” despite its 853 km coastline and maritime wealth.

“Eighty percent of our daily essentials from food to fashion depend on the ocean,” Essien warned, highlighting that Nigeria’s Blue Economy Policy must transition from vision to execution.

The session, themed “Blueprint to Reality,” dissected Nigeria’s 10-year marine policy and called for clear action steps, stakeholder synergy, infrastructure development, human capital investment, and inland waterways rejuvenation.

BEA’s powerful call signals a national awakening. “Let’s stop ignoring the ocean,” Essien urged. “It’s time to integrate it into our economy, education, and lives.”
