The maiden edition of the Jesus Carnival took place on Easter Monday in the state capital, Calabar. The event was inaugurated by the Governor, Apostle Senator Bassey Edet Otu, and his wife, Bishop Eyoawan Bassey Otu.

This colorful and spiritually uplifting event, characterized by grandeur and cultural expression, serves as a spiritual complement to the internationally acclaimed Carnival Calabar, which traditionally takes place every December.

Organizers explained that the Jesus Carnival is conceived as a moment for collective gratitude to God for the success of Carnival Calabar and the ongoing progress and development of Cross River State. It uniquely blends faith, culture, and thanksgiving into a Christian celebration during the Easter period.

Governor Otu stated, “Jesus Christ has taken Cross River State to unimaginable heights within two years of this administration. From inception, I declared this a Godly state, and Jesus the true Governor.

Easter Monday has now been set aside to celebrate Jesus and to say, ‘Father, thank You for how far You’ve brought us,’” declared Governor Bassey Edet Otu.

Easter Monday has now been set aside to celebrate Jesus and to say, ‘Father, thank You for how far You’ve brought us.’ The story of Cross River State is changing for the better. I’m grateful to all the men and women of God who have continually kept the state in their prayers.”

He urged more Christians to join in praying for Cross River State, emphasizing that “no investment in the things of God is ever wasted.” Governor Otu also expressed his gratitude to the large number of clergy who led their congregations in participating in the inaugural event.

The parade route spanned several key locations across Calabar Municipality and Calabar South, including Millennium Park, Watt Market, Nelson Mandela Street, Target Street, and the Mary Slessor Roundabout, before concluding at the main carnival corridor. Prayers were offered at various roundabouts along the route, adding a significant spiritual dimension to the procession.

Governor Otu and his wife joined thousands of Christian faithful in dancing and singing, with gospel music filling the streets in a joyful demonstration of faith.

Bishop Mrs. Eyoawan Otu, speaking before the flag-off, shared that the vision for the Easter event was inspired by a deep desire to dedicate a significant part of the state’s tourism calendar to the celebration of Jesus Christ.
