Gov Bassey Otu unveils Carnival Calabar 2026 theme “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny”, promising innovation, tourism growth and wider participation
Cross River State Governor, Bassey Otu, on Sunday unveiled the theme for Carnival Calabar 2026 as “Rethinking Our Collective Destiny”, announcing plans to expand innovation, deepen public participation and strengthen the festival’s global appeal.
The unveiling took place in Lagos during the official launch of Carnival Calabar and Festival 2026, marking the 21st anniversary edition of the globally recognised cultural event.
Governor Otu said the new theme reflects a collective commitment to reimagining the future of the carnival as a platform for economic growth, cultural preservation and tourism development.
He described the launch not just as a ceremonial unveiling but as a shared vision for the people of Cross River and Nigeria at large.
“We are not just unveiling a theme; we are unveiling a vision,” Otu said.
He explained that the Carnival Calabar 2026 theme challenges stakeholders to think beyond the present and explore greater possibilities through culture, creativity and tourism.
Otu noted that the carnival has grown into a major economic and cultural platform, creating opportunities for businesses, performers, artisans and young people across the state.
He stressed the need for continuous innovation and wider participation to ensure that more communities benefit directly from the festival’s economic impact.
“This carnival belongs to all of us, and its success depends on our collective commitment,” he added.
Chairman of the Carnival Calabar Commission, Gabe Onah, announced that the 2026 edition will introduce online voting to increase public participation and engagement.
He said the innovation will allow communities and audiences to actively shape aspects of the carnival rather than remain passive observers.
Onah added that organisers are also exploring digital platforms and creative partnerships to expand global access and visibility for the festival.
Executive Director, General Entertainment at MultiChoice, Busola Tejumola, said the carnival has evolved significantly over the years and should increasingly highlight the cultural stories behind its performances and costumes.
She supported the introduction of audience participation mechanisms, noting that it would enhance engagement and deepen the overall experience.
Portuguese Ambassador to Nigeria, Paulo Santos, praised Carnival Calabar as a world-class cultural event, comparing it favourably with major carnivals in Europe, Brazil and the Americas.
He said the festival serves as a powerful tool for cultural exchange and international connection.
Tourism stakeholders at the event also called for stronger marketing of Cross River as a key destination during the festive season, urging industry players to develop travel packages around Carnival Calabar 2026.
They noted that the carnival continues to generate economic opportunities for local businesses, creatives and service providers, while attracting global attention to Nigeria’s cultural tourism potential.
