The Lagos State Government has announced that over 20,000 participants are expected to gather for Afropolis Lagos 2024, a festival celebrating African cultural heritage.

The event, organised by the Lagos State Ministry of Tourism, Arts and Culture in collaboration with QDance, will take place from 26 October to 3 November 2024.

The State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, revealed the details during a press briefing at the J Randle Centre for Yoruba Culture and History, Onikan, Lagos.

She highlighted the festival’s theme, “We Need New Myths,” and stressed its role in fostering connections that transcend borders, showcasing the potential of Africa’s creative industries to drive economic growth and cultural exchange.

Afropolis Lagos 2024 will offer a wide array of activities, including a VIP preview and cocktail on the opening day, followed by a grand ceremony at The Vibez Stage.

The Deputy Governor of Lagos, Dr Kadir Obafemi Hamzat, will explore the city’s role as a hub for the global African creative economy.

A vibrant carnival procession will bring the streets of Lagos Island to life on 27 October, culminating in the Afropolis Global African Vibez Exchange (G.A.V.E).

The festival will also include daily film screenings, interactive art installations, performances, and a tour of the J Randle Centre led by Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on 28 October.

The closing weekend will feature an international performance showcase and an Afro House and EDM Rave on 3 November.

The commissioner described the festival as more than just an event, calling it a celebration of African identity and talent.

“Afropolis is a testament to the power of creativity to unite and inspire,” she said, emphasising Lagos’ position as the largest black cultural melting pot and a leader in creative sectors such as music, fashion, gaming, and technology.

Participants can register through afropolis.org, with daily passes priced at N3,000 and N15,000 for the full nine-day experience.
