Ojude Oba Festival is a cultural and economic pride of Southwest Nigeria, says tourism leader Apata Samson Nunayon, urging greater global support

Ojude Oba Festival pride was reaffirmed by Hon. Apata Samson Nunayon, Vice President of the Association of Tourism Practitioners of Nigeria (ATPN), South West Region, who praised organisers and stakeholders for their steadfast promotion of the annual cultural celebration.

Speaking in a statement released shortly after the 2025 edition, Apata declared the festival a beacon of culture and a vital force for regional pride and economic progress.

According to Apata, the Ojude Oba Festival continues to strengthen its global profile while retaining deep local significance. He described it as a unique platform that exhibits the traditions, values, and identity of the Southwest.

The festival, held annually in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, attracts thousands of participants and tourists, creating a vibrant atmosphere that celebrates Yoruba heritage and history.

“The festival’s world-class status attracts visitors from far and wide, boosting tourism revenue and promoting cultural exchange between Southwest Nigeria and the global community,” Apata noted.

He emphasised the event’s role in projecting Nigeria’s soft power, serving not only as a cultural exhibition but also as a driver of economic impact through tourism-related activities.

Apata commended the Ogun State government and all organisers for their dedication, adding that the sustained support has helped maintain the festival’s relevance both locally and internationally.

He appealed for increased investment and support from government agencies, private enterprises, and the general public to further develop the festival’s potential.

He proposed greater funding and infrastructural backing, along with a focus on sustainability and environmental responsibility in managing the festival’s growing influence.

Apata also urged more deliberate community participation, highlighting the importance of inclusive planning that reflects the spirit of the festival.

On the issue of safety, Apata advised organisers to prioritise robust security arrangements to preserve the integrity and positive reputation of the Ojude Oba Festival.

“We strongly recommend that organisers prioritise safety and security measures to ensure a secure and enjoyable experience for all attendees, thereby protecting the festival’s value and reputation,” he said.

He further suggested engaging seasoned tourism professionals to diversify the event’s structure and enhance its attractiveness on the global stage.

“The Ojude Oba Festival is a shining example of Southwest Nigeria’s rich cultural heritage and communal pride,” he concluded. “We look forward to continued collaboration and support from all stakeholders to ensure its continued success.”

The festival, which began over a century ago, has become one of the most anticipated cultural events in Nigeria.
