Alaafin Owoade Unveils Oyo Empire Day Committee to unite descendants worldwide ahead of the inaugural Oyo Empire Day in December 2026
His Imperial Majesty, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, the Alaafin of Oyo, on Wednesday, 5 August 2026, in Oyo, unveiled the Planning Committee for the maiden Oyo Empire Day celebration, calling on descendants of the historic Oyo Empire across Nigeria and the diaspora to embrace unity and collective responsibility in preserving their shared heritage.
The inaugural celebration is scheduled to take place from 17 to 19 December 2026 and is intended to become an annual cultural and historical gathering for communities with ancestral links to the old Oyo Empire.
According to the palace, the initiative is designed to strengthen cultural identity, encourage historical scholarship, promote tourism, attract investment and deepen collaboration among Oyo descendants worldwide.
Announcing the committee through his Director of Media and Publicity, Bode Durojaiye, Oba Owoade said the event transcends the boundaries of Oyo Atiba and belongs to every community historically connected to the former empire.
“Oyo Empire Day is not a celebration of Oyo Atiba alone. It is a celebration of the common ancestry, history, civilisation, institutions, values and cultural heritage of the entire Oyo-speaking people wherever they reside,” the monarch said.
The Alaafin added that the celebration would provide a unifying platform for descendants to reconnect with their identity while advancing youth development, cultural renaissance, economic partnerships and sustainable socio-economic cooperation.
The Planning Committee brings together academics, professionals, industrialists, business leaders, politicians, technocrats, media practitioners, cultural ambassadors, youth and women leaders, as well as representatives of the diaspora.
Members have been drawn from Oyo, Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Kwara, Kogi and Lagos states, alongside communities in the Republic of Benin.
Several prominent traditional rulers from across Yorubaland have also agreed to play advisory and ceremonial roles in the preparations.
Among the distinguished personalities associated with the initiative are filmmaker Tunde Kelani, Bishop Ayo Lawrence Ladigbolu, Dr Kunle Ogunmola, Dr Wole Akanni Duro-Ladipo, Baba Bamiji Ojo and other respected cultural advocates and community leaders.
Palace officials said the committee’s full membership will be formally unveiled during its inauguration.
A notable aspect of the initiative is its deliberate emphasis on inclusivity. Rather than limiting participation to Oyo town, the palace has extended invitations to royal fathers and stakeholders from historically affiliated communities, reflecting the Alaafin’s vision of a broad cultural renaissance rooted in shared history.
The announcement also marks another significant step in Oba Owoade’s reign following his coronation as the 46th Alaafin of Oyo in March 2026.
Since ascending the throne, the monarch has consistently promoted cultural preservation, community engagement and social development, while participating in wider state initiatives on peace, security and traditional governance.
Historically, the Oyo Empire emerged as one of West Africa’s most influential pre-colonial states between the 17th and 18th centuries, exercising political, military and commercial influence across much of present-day south-western Nigeria and neighbouring territories.
Although the empire eventually declined during the 19th century, its institutions, traditions and cultural legacy continue to shape Yoruba society today.
Expressing confidence in the committee’s ability to deliver a successful inaugural event, Oba Owoade thanked traditional rulers, professionals and community leaders who have already embraced the vision.
“Their collective efforts will lay a solid foundation for what is expected to become an enduring annual cultural and historical event of international significance,” the Alaafin said.
The success of the maiden celebration is expected to be closely watched by cultural organisations, historians and Yoruba communities worldwide as efforts gather momentum to preserve one of Africa’s most enduring royal and historical legacies.
