The state first adopted August 20 as a holiday in 2023, following a motion by the Ogun State House of Assembly and approval by Governor Dapo Abiodun.

In a statement signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser to the Governor on Information and Strategy, the government said the day underscores the administration’s recognition of Yoruba traditions as a vital part of the state’s identity.

“Isese Day serves as an opportunity for adherents of the Yoruba religion to honour their ancestors, engage in traditional practices, and promote the values and teachings inherent in their spiritual beliefs,” the statement read.

The government noted that the celebration strengthens community bonds among practitioners while also inviting the broader society to appreciate the richness of Yoruba cultural heritage.
