Nigerian tourism partnership has gained a significant boost as Ethiopian Airlines reaffirmed its commitment to the country’s travel and cultural sectors. The airline expressed strong interest in partnering with major local festivals and events across Nigeria.

The announcement was made by Firiehiwot Mekonnen, Area Manager of Ethiopian Airlines in Nigeria, during the launch of the airline’s second daily flight into Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos.

The move marks a substantial expansion of Ethiopian Airlines’ presence and service offering within the region.

Mekonnen explained that the airline is not only expanding flight operations but also positioning itself as an active contributor to Nigeria’s cultural and tourism revival.

“Ethiopian Airlines is willing and able to partner and support travel and tourism in Nigeria,” she said. “In the coming months, we will unveil plans to actively engage with Nigeria’s vibrant cultural scene.”

She listed Detty December, Carnival Calabar, Ojude Oba, and the Durbar Festival as key events the airline is exploring for partnership. Her comments highlighted Ethiopian Airlines’ keen awareness of Nigeria’s diverse cultural offerings and their potential for driving inbound tourism.

The newly launched second daily flight was inaugurated with a full passenger load, underscoring the high demand for regional travel between Nigeria and other international destinations.

The expanded frequency is expected to enhance both business and leisure travel, creating more opportunities for economic and cultural exchange.

Mekonnen extended her appreciation to the Federal Ministry of Aviation and Aerospace Development, led by Barrister Festus Keyamo, SAN.

She praised the ministry’s role in enabling aviation growth and facilitating the airline’s operations in Nigeria. “We are grateful for the support and the enabling environment that has been provided,” she added.

The Area Manager also acknowledged the contributions of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority, as well as local travel agencies, media partners, and other key stakeholders. She described them as indispensable collaborators in Ethiopian Airlines’ continued success in the Nigerian market.

“To our most esteemed passengers—without your patronage, we would not be here. We deeply appreciate your continued support and assure you of our commitment to serve even better,” Mekonnen noted. Her words were met with applause from dignitaries and partners present at the event.

She also commended the Ethiopian Airlines team based in Lagos, praising their dedication and teamwork in making the expanded operation a reality. Their efforts, she said, reflected the airline’s commitment to excellence and customer satisfaction.

The airline’s willingness to partner with Nigerian festivals and cultural programmes is seen by tourism experts as a strong step towards greater synergy between aviation and heritage promotion.

The announcement is also a clear signal of Ethiopian Airlines’ confidence in the Nigerian market and its long-term strategic interest in West Africa.

Ethiopian Airlines has long been considered one of Africa’s most successful carriers. Its expansion in Nigeria, a key market in the continent, further reinforces its leadership position while contributing positively to local industry growth.

The second daily flight is expected to improve air connectivity and reduce travel bottlenecks, making Nigeria more accessible to tourists and investors.

The development is timely, as stakeholders in the tourism sector continue to call for stronger infrastructure and international collaborations.

With Ethiopian Airlines now doubling its Lagos service, industry observers believe Nigeria is poised to benefit from increased visitor traffic and renewed cultural visibility on the global stage.

The airline’s pledge to support Nigerian tourism partnership through event sponsorships and travel facilitation is already being welcomed by many.
