Lagos State government is driving growth in the hospitality sector through strategic collaborations and continuous innovation, says Toke Benson-Awoyinka

The Lagos State Commissioner for Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mrs. Toke Benson-Awoyinka, has reaffirmed the state government’s unwavering commitment to driving the growth of the hospitality sector.

Speaking at the Institute of Hospitality (UK), Nigeria Region’s Annual General Meeting (AGM), held at Radisson Blu in Victoria Island, Benson-Awoyinka highlighted the crucial role of both the public and private sectors in positioning Lagos as Africa’s premier tourism and hospitality destination.

In her address, Benson-Awoyinka emphasised that the success of a thriving hospitality industry hinges on strategic collaborations, professional excellence, and continuous innovation.

She noted that under the leadership of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the state is focused on creating an enabling environment for the industry to flourish. This includes capacity-building programmes, regulatory reforms, and significant investments in tourism infrastructure.

The Commissioner recognised the vital role played by the Institute of Hospitality in shaping industry professionals and commended its continuous efforts in mentorship and skills development.

She urged the institute’s members to uphold a culture of excellence within the sector, which would, in turn, contribute to the growth of the broader tourism ecosystem.

Mr. Femi Falebita, President of the Institute of Hospitality Nigeria, also addressed the AGM, calling on industry stakeholders to take a more collaborative approach in advancing the sector.

He stressed the importance of focusing on long-term sustainability rather than short-term gains. According to Falebita, the industry needs to prioritise skills development, ethical leadership, and high professional standards to ensure future growth.

Despite the financial challenges facing the hospitality sector, Falebita expressed optimism about the Institute’s potential to secure strategic sponsorships and partnerships that align with its mission.

He added that the organisation’s primary focus is not solely on financial growth but on empowering hospitality professionals through continuous learning and leadership development.

Veteran hospitality expert Mr. Gbenga Sunmonu also took part in the event, delivering a goodwill message that underscored the importance of leadership in driving industry transformation.

Sunmonu stressed that leadership goes beyond holding a title and involves setting the right example and inspiring innovation. He encouraged professionals to embrace change, empower their teams, and consistently uphold the highest industry standards.
