At the Igba Oruru Eke Festival, Dr. Chukwuma Ezeoruonye urged Nigerians to revive traditional values, emphasising cultural integrity and unity.

At the 2024 Igba Oruru Eke Annual Cultural Festival in Anambra State, Dr. Chukwuma Ezeoruonye, a renowned traditional medical practitioner and Supreme Leader of the

Traditional Practitioners Association of Nigeria, passionately defended the integrity of traditional practices. Emphasising their role in Nigeria’s cultural identity, Ezeoruonye advocated for a return to indigenous beliefs, stressing that true traditionalists understand the consequences of deviating into criminality.

The festival, hosted by the Chief Priest of Oruru Eke Ancient Deity in Aguata Local Government Area, saw Ezeoruonye underline how traditional practices preserve cultural heritage and moral values.

Reflecting on the past, he remarked, “During the time of our forefathers, crimes such as armed robbery, kidnappings, and ritual murders were virtually non-existent.”

He argued that contemporary issues, from economic struggles to security challenges, are partly due to abandoning indigenous practices in favour of foreign religious doctrines.

Addressing Nigeria’s challenges, Ezeoruonye referenced President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration, observing that “his actions may be influenced by the Christian framework that has historically misled our people.”

He urged Nigerians, especially the youth, to reconnect with their heritage, stating that a return to traditional beliefs could bring stability to society.

Ezeoruonye shared his own journey, revealing that despite two of his brothers being Catholic priests, he found his path in traditional religion, embracing its deep personal significance.

“I am a digital traditional doctor, and my ‘ofor’ is in an air-conditioned room,” he remarked, symbolising the modernisation of traditional practices.

He noted his ongoing efforts to support the underprivileged as a way to honour the prosperity granted to him by the gods.

Notable figures such as Prince Chigbo Enendu and Chidiebere Ezeafulukwe also attended, echoing Ezeoruonye’s call for Igbo youth to embrace their cultural heritage.

Their presence highlighted a shared commitment to preserving ancestral values and ensuring they are passed down to future generations.

The festival continues to serve as a platform for reinforcing cultural pride and unity within the Igbo community.
