Lagos State has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable tourism and creative industry growth ahead of the 68th UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa meeting
Lagos reaffirms commitment to sustainable tourism as the state prepares to play a strategic role in advancing Africa’s creative and tourism sectors.
The Special Adviser to the Lagos State Governor on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, Mr Idris Aregbe, made this clear during a high-level meeting hosted by the Federal Ministry of Art, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy in Abuja on 10 June 2025.
The meeting, monitored from Lagos, served as a build-up to the 68th Meeting of the UN Tourism Regional Commission for Africa (CAF) 2025, drawing stakeholders from across the continent, including the UN Tourism Secretary-General, Mr Zurab Pololikashvili.
Aregbe outlined Lagos State’s active role in empowering creative talents, enhancing tourism infrastructure, and adopting digital tools to boost engagement and education in the sector.
He stressed the role of innovation and collaboration in driving social impact, noting that Lagos is aligning its tourism agenda with global sustainability goals.
“We are committed to empowering creatives, building infrastructure, and using innovation to drive tourism and social impact in Lagos,” Aregbe said.
Themed “Boosting Social Impact and Education in Tourism via Innovation, AI, and Creative Industries in Africa,” the meeting highlighted how African countries can tap into emerging technologies to redefine their tourism ecosystems.
Aregbe’s remarks also underscored Lagos’ readiness to support the broader African tourism community through knowledge sharing, investment in digital platforms, and partnerships with international stakeholders.
The UN Tourism CAF 2025 event is expected to chart a new path for inclusive and sustainable tourism in Africa, with Lagos positioned as a leading voice in that conversation.
