The Cultural Counselor of the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Nigeria, Mr. Yang Jianxing, emphasised the importance of film and television as vital tools for fostering understanding among diverse cultures during the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Chinese Film and Television Broadcast Month in Nigeria.

This event, organised by StarTimes Nigeria and hosted by the China Cultural Center in Nigeria, aims to showcase the unique charm of Chinese culture and the achievements of contemporary China’s economic and social development to the Nigerian audience.

In his address, Mr. Jianxing highlighted the enduring friendship between China and Nigeria, noting that both nations share rich histories and vibrant cultures.

He remarked, “National relations are built on mutual understanding among people. We believe that cultural exchange and cooperation are essential driving forces for advancing our bilateral relations.”

Through the medium of film and television, he expressed hope that Nigerians would gain deeper insights into Chinese culture and the values held by the Chinese people.

The initiative aligns with the outcomes of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and reflects the commitments made during meetings between the Presidents of China and Nigeria.

According to Mr. Jianxing, the programme underscores Nigeria’s role as a cultural powerhouse with its thriving film industry, famously known as Nollywood.

Representing the Ministry of Art, Culture, Creative Economy and Tourism, Permanent Secretary Patricia Roberts, through Director of International Cultural Relationships Zainab Ali-Biu, reaffirmed the government’s dedication to fostering cultural exchanges.

She noted, “Cultural exchange plays a vital role in fostering understanding, communication, and friendship between nations.

Through the film and television industry, we have unique opportunities to share stories, values, and perspectives with audiences from different backgrounds.”

Salihu Dembos, the Director General of the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), who was represented by Mr. Tunji Adepoju, also spoke at the event, describing it as a testament to the collaborative stories and shared vision between China and Africa.

He remarked, “It is clear that our story holds the power to build bridges of deepening understanding and foster mutual respect.”

The Chief Executive Officer of NTA-Star TV Network, Mr. Joshua Wang, expressed optimism that the cultural exchange between China and Nigeria would be further strengthened through the two-month programme.

“This festival celebrates the deep-rooted friendship between China and Nigeria and is a testament to our shared love for storytelling,” he said.

The Chinese Film and Television Broadcast Month runs from November to December, featuring approximately 35 Chinese films, TV series, and documentaries.

These works reflect various aspects of Chinese cultural life, capturing the emotions, dreams, and aspirations of the Chinese people while offering a platform for deeper cross-cultural engagement.
