Badagry Heritage Festival 2024 opens with a Yoruba classical ballet and cultural performances, celebrating the coastal town’s rich heritage.
The highly anticipated Badagry Heritage Festival 2024 is set to begin on December 27, with a grand opening featuring a Yoruba classical ballet titled “Obi ati Orogbo” at the Lagos State Theatre Building.
The festival, which will run until December 29, promises to be an unforgettable experience celebrating the cultural richness of Badagry, a coastal town known for its deep historical significance.
Mr Tunde Ajose, the Head of the Organising Committee for the festival, confirmed that the event will commence with a red-carpet ceremony at 3.00 p.m. on December 27, setting the stage for an elegant and festive atmosphere.
The highlight of the day will be the premiere of “Obi ati Orogbo”, a classical ballet that portrays traditional Yoruba culture and history.
Ajose announced that the first screening of the ballet will take place from 4.00 p.m. to 6.00 p.m., and it will be exclusively reserved for royals and political dignitaries.
Following this, a second screening at 6.00 p.m. will be open to the general public, especially targeting youths, ensuring a broader audience can experience this important cultural performance.
The festival’s grand finale will take place on December 29, at the Marina Waterfront, where the vibrant cultural displays will offer a deep dive into the heritage of Badagry.
Various communities within the town will showcase their unique cultural performances, including the Zangheto masquerades, traditional Sato drum beats, boat displays, and more, all designed to highlight the town’s historical and cultural peculiarity.
Ajose expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Lagos State Government and the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, and Culture for their approval and support in making the festival a reality.
He also commended Mr Bonu Solomon, the lawmaker representing Badagry Constituency 1 in the Lagos State House of Assembly and the Chairman of the House Committee on Tourism, Arts, and Culture, for his instrumental role in facilitating the event.
The festival will also be attended by Badagry’s traditional rulers, Baales, and notable political figures, adding a sense of prominence to the celebration.
Ajose concluded by inviting tourists to visit Badagry during this festive period. “Get ready for a cultural extravaganza like no other,” he said, encouraging both locals and visitors to immerse themselves in the town’s rich cultural heritage.
