King Thutmose II tomb discovery

Archaeologists uncover King Thutmose II’s lost tomb near Luxor, marking the first pharaonic royal tomb discovery in over 100 years

This remarkable find marks the first discovery of a pharaonic royal tomb in over 100 years, since the unearthing of King Tutankhamun’s tomb in 1922.

Located west of the Valley of the Kings, the tomb belonged to Thutmose II, a ruler of Egypt’s 18th Dynasty who reigned over 3,500 years ago.

The site had remained undiscovered until now, making it the last missing royal tomb of its era.

Archaeologists confirmed the tomb’s identity through alabaster vessels inscribed with the names of King Thutmose II and his wife, Queen Hatshepsut—one of Egypt’s few female pharaohs.

Other significant discoveries within the tomb include fragments of funerary furniture, pieces of mortar with blue inscriptions, yellow stars, and religious texts.

Despite its historical significance, the tomb suffered extensive damage due to flooding shortly after the king’s burial.

The ministry reported that much of its original contents had been displaced, and efforts to recover and document them are ongoing.
