Adeleke Osun-Osogbo Grove facelift earns praise as worshippers and visitors applaud improved roads ahead of the historic festival celebration

The rehabilitation work, carried out by the Osun State Government through the Ministry of Works, has improved access to the UNESCO World Heritage Site as thousands of local and international visitors arrive for the festival’s grand finale.
For many worshippers, the improved routes have eased movement to the sacred river area, which traditionally attracts large crowds during the annual celebration of Yoruba cultural and spiritual heritage.
A devotee, Mrs Kabirat Osuntomi, said the condition of the roads had previously raised concerns among visitors who struggled to access the grove during festival periods.
Osuntomi said the rehabilitation had brought relief to worshippers, tourists and residents who rely on the routes throughout the year.
She, however, urged the government to maintain the upgraded roads and continue improving other facilities within the sacred site.
“It is important that the maintenance continues because the grove receives visitors beyond the festival period,” she said.
Another traditional worshipper, Mr Musiliu Oguntoye, welcomed the development but called for greater support from government agencies, private organisations and cultural stakeholders to ensure the heritage site meets international standards.
Oguntoye also appealed for increased sponsorship of the annual festival, saying stronger support would help preserve its cultural significance while making the celebration more attractive to global visitors.
Residents living around the grove also expressed appreciation for the improvement.
Mrs Adunni Awotunde described the rehabilitation as a positive step that had reduced difficulties faced by visitors travelling to the site during one of Nigeria’s most recognised cultural events.
Awotunde encouraged the government to extend rehabilitation efforts to other parts of the grove to further enhance tourism and preserve the historic environment.
The Osun-Osogbo Festival, which celebrates the spiritual relationship between the Yoruba people and the Osun River, remains one of Nigeria’s most important cultural gatherings.
The 2026 edition has attracted thousands of devotees, tourists and cultural enthusiasts, with the grand finale featuring the traditional procession led by the Arugba, who carries the sacred calabash to the riverbank as part of the ancient rituals.
The facelift of the access roads adds to ongoing efforts to improve the visitor experience while protecting the cultural importance of the centuries-old sacred grove.
