Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has expressed satisfaction with the level of work on the newly refurbished National Arts Theatre, Iganmu, now named Wole Soyinka Centre For Culture And The Creative Arts, saying it would soon be completed and open for public activities.
Sanwo-Olu disclosed this on Sunday when he led officials on tour of the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts in Iganmu, Lagos.
He stated that the newly transformed treasure and one-stop shop, which can be compared to the World International Centre, would be completed in about three to four months’ time.
The governor commended the Bankers’ committee, as well as the creative sector, for collaborating with the Lagos State government within the past five years to transform the national treasure.
He noted that the transformation will restore the glory of the edifice to meet international standards.
According to Sanwo-Olu, “When completed, the Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts would promote arts, tourism and culture; it would be a place where international community can converge for conferences, host world-class performances, among other activities.”
Governor Sanwo-Olu said that the arts theatre has received transformation.
He said that the “Renovation of the National Arts Theatre shows that it has brought back the whole glory in a bigger and more transformative way of what it used to be.”
Also at the event, Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Arts and Culture, Idris Aregbe, said the national treasure has been positioned to compete favourably with the international community as a tourist attraction while promoting the entertainment industry.
Aregbe said that commencement of activities at the national treasure would help to take a lot of youths off the streets, while generating employments for many Nigerians.
The Wole Soyinka Centre for Culture and the Creative Arts, Iganmu, Lagos, now accommodates Arts and Cultural Gallery, Banquet Hall, Conference Centre and Cinema rooms, parking facilities, among others.
