Tekno Rara inspiration revealed as the singer says Wizkid’s Ojuelegba influenced the creation of his hit song

During a recent interview on a Cool FM podcast, Tekno spoke openly about the similarities between both songs, explaining that the musical structure and progression of Rara were strongly shaped by the sound and feeling of Ojuelegba.

The artiste said his admiration for Wizkid’s 2014 hit pushed him to create his own record after repeatedly listening to the song and studying its musical elements.

“Rara is ‘Ojuelegba’. It’s the same thing. Same progression, same everything. A good chef is always a good chef,” Tekno said.

The award-winning musician explained that inspiration is a natural part of the creative process and credited Wizkid’s record as one of the songs that influenced his own artistic direction.

“I listened to ‘Ojuelegba’ so much that it gave me a hit song. That’s one of my all-time favourite songs. Not just Afrobeats, all time,” he added.

Tekno’s comments have attracted attention because of his willingness to openly acknowledge the impact another artiste’s work had on one of his most successful releases. Rather than presenting creativity as something that exists in isolation, he highlighted how musicians often build new ideas from sounds that inspire them.

Released in 2014, Wizkid’s Ojuelegba became one of the songs that helped strengthen Afrobeats’ global appeal, earning praise for its storytelling, production and emotional connection with listeners.

Tekno also expressed surprise after learning that Wizkid had previously considered not releasing the song, given the impact it later achieved internationally.

Reflecting on the track’s success, Tekno said he found it difficult to believe such an influential record was once at risk of remaining unheard, describing it as a simple but powerful creation.

The revelation has sparked conversations among music fans, with many praising Tekno’s honesty and celebrating the continued influence of Ojuelegba on a new generation of Nigerian artistes.
