Next Olubadan Ascension News has triggered emotional tributes nationwide following the shocking passing of Oba Olakulehin in Ibadan on Monday
Next Olubadan Ascension News has taken centre stage following the confirmed passing of Oba Owolabi Olakulehin, the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland. The revered monarch joined his ancestors early Monday, a mere two days after marking his 90th birthday.
His passing has set into motion the traditional succession process, with Oba Rashidi Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan, expected to ascend the throne next.
The death of Oba Olakulehin was first reported online before it was officially confirmed by Toye Arulogun, a former Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism.
“With utmost and profound gratitude to Almighty God, I announce the passing on of Oba Olakulehin,” Arulogun said emotionally from the late monarch’s private residence in Alalubosa GRA, Ibadan.
The traditional palace at Oke-Aremo was temporarily closed as palace staff and family members relocated to Alalubosa. The mood quickly shifted from festivity to mourning, as preparations were underway for what would have been Oba Olakulehin’s first coronation anniversary this coming Saturday.
Oba Rashidi Ladoja, a former governor of Oyo State, is next in line due to the established rotational ascension system between the Balogun and Otun lines.
The late Oba belonged to the Balogun line, and the Otun line now holds the right to produce the next Olubadan. Though Ladoja was reported to be outside Ibadan at the time, his Bodija residence witnessed an influx of drummers and well-wishers anticipating his ascension.
President Bola Tinubu expressed deep sadness at the monarch’s demise. His spokesman, Bayo Onanuga, described Oba Olakulehin as “a revered traditional ruler, a statesman, and a symbol of peace and wisdom.”
In a heartfelt statement, Tinubu added, “Oba Olakulehin was not only a custodian of Ibadan’s rich history and culture but also a man of intellect and principle whose legacy will not be forgotten.”
Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde also paid tribute, saying, “We don’t always want them to go. We want them to stay with us. But God has designed our bodies for a certain period.” The governor promised the late king’s family full state support for a dignified burial.
Tributes also came from Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who praised the late monarch’s urbane character and cultural depth. “He was a man of peace whose reign fostered unity in Ibadan,” he said.
Former Senate President Bukola Saraki noted the loss of “a bridge builder,” while Oyo House Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin described the moment as “a heartbreaking twist of fate.” He added, “In just 48 hours, we moved from celebration to sorrow, but such is the tapestry of life.”
The Sultan of Sokoto, Sa’ad Abubakar, acknowledged the king’s contributions to peace and culture. “Even though he reigned for only a short period, his dedication to his people will long be remembered,” he remarked.
A similar sentiment was echoed by the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade, who described Oba Olakulehin as “a visionary monarch whose short reign will remain indelible.” Oba Murtala Adeleke from Katsina added, “His leadership style showed remarkable grace and maturity.”
Senator Sharafadeen Alli also paid homage. “Kabiyesi’s humility and clarity of purpose will be missed by those privileged to serve with him,” he said.
