Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke on Friday assured the people of Ijesha land that, there is no going back by his administration to establish the University of Ilesha, stating that the institution would be built on solid ground to make it a sustainable one.

He, however, appealed to people of the town while on inspection to the citadel of learning in Ilesha that he would not want anybody to rush him on the university issue, adding that having been established, the University has come to stay.

“My goal is to ensure that the University is properly established just as the PDP government under Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola did on the establishment of the Osun State University. The review committee on the subject has submitted its report and I am issuing a white paper”.

He said, “I want to build the University of Ilesa on solid ground and as a sustainable institution. That is why I form a committee and the committee did a great job. The reason for coming here today is to let you know the students, the staff and of course Ijesa people that we mean the business.”

“This is the time for everything, Osun people will keep smiling and dancing. When it comes to working, everybody will involve”.

“I am here to assess the actual state of the University of Ilesa and rub mind with our people on moving Ijeshaland forward. Let me remind Ijesa people that I was the first to propose an upgrade of College of Education to University of Ilesa. I made the promise at the Palace of the Kabiyesi Owa of Ijesaland during the 2018 elections.”

“We all know that Mr Oyetola for three years did nothing on the university until the approach of the 2022 elections. My predecessor rushed the establishment of the University as a political project.”

“My goal is to ensure that the University is properly established just as the PDP government did on the establishment of the Osun State University. The review committee on the subject has submitted its report and I am issuing a white paper”.

In his own remark, Professor Taiwo Ashaolu, Chairman Review committee of the university said, “the process of appointment must follow the extant law, the university should commence with eight faculties, namely; Education and vocational technology, Management Sciences, Social sciences, Science, Technology and Innovations, Humanities and Cultures, Agriculture and Agric Business and Basic Medical Sciences. ”

“Among the recommendations, all the existing staff both academic and non-teaching of Osun State College of Education Ilesha are to be transited to the university. Recruitment process shall be by advertisement in national newspapers and other mediums. ”

“An institute of education should be established under the faculty of education in the university to oversee the completion of the programme of the current students.”

“For smooth running of the university, multiple sources of income is hereby recommended. The tuition fee for the school should be affordable,” he concluded.

Lagos State House of Assembly powers

The Lagos Assembly clarifies that its suspension of Alimosho chairman, Jelili Sulaimon, is legally backed, in line with statutory provisions.

The Lagos State House of Assembly, citing legal provisions, defends its power to suspend the Alimosho council chairman, Jelili Sulaimon, amidst public outcry.

The Lagos State House of Assembly exercised its legislative powers to suspend Alimosho Local Government Area chairman, Jelili Sulaimon, citing statutory provisions as the legal basis.

The Assembly responded to criticism from Sulaimon’s lawyer, Dr Abdul Mahmud, clarifying that their actions were in line with the Lagos State Local Government Administration Law and the Nigerian Constitution.

Section 24(a) of the Local Government Administration Law empowers the Assembly to suspend or remove council officials following investigations.

Furthermore, Section 128 of the 1999 Constitution grants the Assembly the authority to investigate matters under its jurisdiction.

The Assembly’s response stressed that local government councils, including their chairmen, derive authority from state law, which the Assembly creates and enforces.

The Assembly criticised attempts to sway public sentiment with emotional rhetoric, arguing that the laws are clear on legislative oversight.

It highlighted previous suspensions of the same chairman for violating local government regulations, reiterating the Assembly’s commitment to accountability.

It also rebuffed any comparison between the powers of the National Assembly and state legislatures in local government affairs, stating that only the state legislature holds such authority.

This legal stance ensures that the Lagos State House of Assembly remains the guiding force in maintaining order and transparency within local governments, further dismissing counterarguments that misinterpret legislative boundaries.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has issued an indefinite suspension to Jelili Sulaimon, the chairman of Alimosho Local Government, effective immediately.

The Lagos State House of Assembly has placed Alimosho Local Government Chairman Jelili Sulaimon under indefinite suspension. The suspension takes immediate effect following a plenary session where lawmakers reached a unanimous decision.

The suspension stems from allegations of non-compliance and misconduct by Sulaimon. Honourable Sanni Okanlawon, chair of the Local Government Administration Committee, initiated the motion. He recounted a serious incident in April 2024 that led to the death of Mr. Micheal Ajayi.

Okanlawon’s investigation revealed Sulaimon’s role in the chaos. Despite invitations to stakeholders, Sulaimon demonstrated ongoing defiance toward the Assembly. His mismanagement of public funds and failure to follow directives warranted immediate action.

Majority Leader Noheem Adams supported the suspension, emphasizing the need for accountability among local government leaders. Other lawmakers echoed concerns about Sulaimon’s disregard for procurement processes and budget adherence.

Honourable Nureni Akinsanya highlighted a report from the State Auditor-General that identified significant financial irregularities in Sulaimon’s records. The report’s findings reinforced the call for suspension.

The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr) Mudashiru Obasa, confirmed the Assembly’s resolution and directed the Clerk to inform relevant authorities.
