Nigerian women showcase philanthropy this International Women’s Day, supporting education, healthcare, creative industries, and rural communities

Nigerian women across sectors are marking International Women’s Day by demonstrating the power of giving back, aligning with the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain.”

Businesswoman and philanthropist Folorunso Alakija recently donated a 250-bed medical research and training hospital to Osun State University, improving healthcare access and supporting medical education.

Her Rose of Sharon Foundation continues to provide scholarships and grants to widows and orphans.

Media entrepreneur Mo Abudu is expanding opportunities in Africa’s creative industry through her initiatives, Hibiscus Finance and the Afro Film Fund, providing funding and support for film and television projects.

Healthcare entrepreneur Awele Elumelu has developed services through Avon Medical to improve access to quality medical care across Nigeria.

Former First Bank chairperson Ibukun Awosika mentors young entrepreneurs and women in business, equipping them with leadership skills through programmes and speaking engagements.

Omotade Alalade’s Beibei Haven Foundation supports couples facing infertility with counselling, advocacy, and medical assistance, addressing reproductive health challenges and reducing stigma.

Music star Tiwa Savage launched the Tiwa Savage Music Foundation in partnership with Berklee College of Music, providing mentorship and intensive training to 100 emerging African music creatives.

Ezinne Ukagwu, director of the Iroto Rural Development Centre in Ogun State, has empowered thousands of rural women with vocational and life skills to foster economic independence.

These women span business, healthcare, activism, entertainment, and entrepreneurship, yet share a common principle: success is meaningful when used to support others.
