Ekiti International Theatre Festival is set to put the state on the global cultural map, with over 50,000 tourists expected for its maiden edition from August 20 to 25, 2025.
The festival a collaboration between the Lagos-based Duke of Shomolu Foundation and the Ekiti State Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy will feature theatre competitions, historical plays, and a cultural day at Ikogosi Warm Springs Resort.
Festival Director, Prof. Rasaki Ojo Bakare, revealed that the Duke of Shomolu Foundation, led by investment banker Joseph Edgar and Managing Director Mofoluwake Edgar, has invested about ₦150 million into the event.
All performers and crew members will be sourced from Ekiti, boosting local employment and the economy.
Sixteen local governments will compete in theatrical showcases, with the top four earning prizes. Command performances will honor Nigerian icons such as Ladi Kwali, Sir Ahmadu Bello, and Chief Moshood Abiola.
Bakare stressed that the festival’s vision goes beyond entertainment it is a strategic effort to integrate creative arts into Ekiti’s economy, strengthen its image nationally and internationally, and foster tourism growth.
Security measures have been put in place, with monitoring beginning from August 17.
The festival will host top Nollywood stars including Dele Odule, Anu Omoloro, and Kehinde Ayeni, alongside dignitaries such as Governor Biodun Oyebanji and Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele.
With plans to run annually for at least five years, the Ekiti International Theatre Festival aims to inspire cultural pride, showcase local talent, and create lasting economic impact.
