CREDICORP Cultural Reorientation

CREDICORP has launched its nationwide Cultural Reorientation Programme in Kano, aiming to democratize consumer credit access and shift public perceptions of credit as a tool for economic growth

The Nigerian Consumer Credit Corporation (CREDICORP) has officially launched its nationwide Cultural Reorientation Programme, commencing with a significant market activation event held on Wednesday, May 21, 2025, at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kano.

Established under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, CREDICORP is a national institution dedicated to democratizing access to consumer credit for all hardworking Nigerians.

Its mandate enables citizens to acquire essential goods and services, such as locally assembled vehicles, solar solutions, and home improvement products, on credit, moving beyond solely cash-based transactions.

This campaign represents the third pillar of CREDICORP’s national strategy, “Cultural Reorientation,” complementing its existing “Infrastructure” and “Capital” pillars.

In the past year, CREDICORP has already rolled out impactful initiatives including Project S.C.A.L.E (Securing Consumer Access for Local Enterprises), which directs consumer credit towards local vendors; the C.A.L.M.

Fund (Credit Access for Light and Mobility), providing credit for CNG vehicle conversions and solar home systems; and YouthCred, a national programme offering affordable credit to young Nigerians, starting with 100,000 NYSC members.

Cultural Reorientation is CREDICORP’s effort to shift long-standing perceptions around credit—helping Nigerians see it not as a trap, but as a tool for growth.

The “Cultural Reorientation” programme aims to shift long-standing perceptions around credit, reframing it as a tool for growth rather than a trap.

This is achieved through community training sessions, digital sensitization campaigns, and on-ground activation events designed to promote responsible borrowing and financial literacy.

The initiative also engages financial institutions, encouraging a shift from traditional collateral-heavy lending models to more inclusive credit assessment methods that better reflect the realities of everyday Nigerians.

Participants at the Kano activation received crucial sensitization on:

The fundamentals of consumer credit, including interest-based and non-interest financing options.

Distinguishing between responsible credit use and harmful debt.

The long-term value of building and maintaining a verifiable credit history.

How CREDICORP partners with diverse financial institutions to expand access to affordable and culturally appropriate credit solutions.

The event featured live testimonials from beneficiaries and included pre- and post-event questionnaires to gauge shifts in public sentiment.

His Excellency, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State, led the event, joined by representatives from the Kano State Government, alongside leaders of market associations, trade cooperatives, and Participating Financial Institutions.

This inaugural activation marks the beginning of a national conversation that positions consumer credit as a tool for economic mobility and improved quality of life.

Further activations are scheduled to take place across the nation in the coming months.
