Nigeria and Spain reviewed bilateral cooperation in security, trade, and investment, reaffirming their strategic partnership in Abuja

Nigeria and Spain have reviewed recent high-level engagements and explored ways to operationalise existing bilateral instruments, including a Memorandum of Understanding on political dialogue.

The development followed a meeting in Abuja where Ambassador Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, Nigeria’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, received Félix Costales Artieda, Ambassador of Spain to Nigeria.

During the meeting, Ambassador Costales highlighted progress in legal and security collaboration, noting Spain’s readiness to enhance joint efforts on counter-terrorism, migration management, and mutual legal assistance.

Ambassador Odumegwu-Ojukwu emphasised the importance of addressing the humanitarian impact of terrorism, youth employment, and economic opportunities as part of a comprehensive security and migration response.

The Nigerian minister also called for expanded Spanish private sector investment, identifying opportunities in energy, infrastructure, digital innovation, renewable energy, and agriculture under Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms.

Both countries discussed further cooperation in trade, tourism, culture, education, and multilateral engagement, reaffirming their shared commitment to regional stability and democratic consolidation in West Africa.

The engagement concluded with a mutual reaffirmation of Nigeria and Spain’s resolve to deepen their strategic partnership through structured political dialogue, security collaboration, and expanded economic ties based on mutual respect and shared prosperity.
