Akwa Ibom is set to host its first boat regatta and fishing festival on September 27, celebrating maritime heritage and boosting tourism.

Akwa Ibom State will host its premier boat regatta and fishing festival on September 27, 2024, at Marina Beach, Uyo. This event aims to celebrate the state’s rich maritime heritage and recognise the hospitality of local communities, such as Nwaniba, which host the Ibom Icon Hotel and Marina Beach—locations with significant historical importance, including a major slave route.

The state’s Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr Charles Udoh, announced that the festival aligns with the 2024 World Tourism Day celebration, highlighting tourism as a sustainable driver for job creation, economic growth, and social inclusion.

A major highlight will be the unveiling of a fully restored slave boat, symbolising the region’s historical journey. A Slave Memorial Park, initiated by a local philanthropist, will also be inaugurated during the festival.

The festival is part of Akwa Ibom’s broader vision to leverage its cultural and historical assets. It will promote peace, culture, and tourism while boosting local economies.

The state government, led by Governor Umo Eno, has also partnered with the Nigerian Navy to ensure safety during the event, with 14 gunboats patrolling the waterways.

Additionally, a luxury ferry service will be introduced to enhance marine transport and tourism in the region.
