The approval was secured during Governor Umo Eno’s meeting with Aviation Minister Festus Keyamo, marking a pivotal moment for the state’s aviation and economic ambitions.

Speaking upon arrival at the airport on Thursday, Governor Eno told journalists that the development would transform the region’s socio-economic landscape.

He said the airport would begin full international operations no later than the first quarter of 2026, noting that enhanced trade, increased tourism and expanded job opportunities were among the immediate benefits.

The governor explained that direct international flights would stimulate business activity and improve connectivity for residents and investors.

He added that Ibom Air was well positioned to expand its operations and partner with international carriers interested in adding Uyo to their Nigerian routes.

Eno described the approval as the outcome of sustained behind-the-scenes work aimed at building an aviation ecosystem capable of attracting global attention.

He emphasised that aligning with the Federal Government had helped unlock developmental opportunities of this scale.

The airport, inaugurated in 2009 and used mainly for domestic services, will now serve as a direct gateway linking Akwa Ibom to international destinations.

With its new status, it is authorised to receive and process foreign airlines and operate cross-border flights, a change expected to elevate the state’s profile as a hub for business and travel.
