Yoruba queens gather in Ile-Ife, talk about advancement of women

Queens from Yorubaland gathered in Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi’s palace, the seat of the Ooni of Ife, to debate topics pertaining to the advancement of women in Nigeria.
The Queen Moremi Ajasoro Initiative and Olori Janet Afolabi Foundation organized the gathering, which brought queens from all around the state together.
It was facilitated by Queen Ronke Ademiluyi Ogunwusi and Queen Janet Afolabi. To honor Black Women’s History Month, the inaugural seminar, titled “The Impact of Oloris on National Development,” was held.
Queen Ronke Ogunwusi, who spoke to the group, emphasized the need to improve women’s economic welfare to achieve national progress.

She emphasized the need for Queens in the gathering to make the well-being of women in their respective localities a priority to enhance gender equality.

She said, “This initiative will help tackle poverty and help as a wealth creation program for women who want to start up small businesses and women who want to scale up their businesses.

Buttressing the importance of achieving national development, Queen Janet Afolabi of Apomu kingdom in the state, added that the Queens should leave by example through the organization of sensitization programs to natives of their localities, stressing that nothing is too small.

Queen Afolabi while charging the Queens present at the event, recalled how she was able to personally teach people in her kingdom the English language every Friday.

She said, “nothing is too small, I teach people in my kingdom English on Fridays for free and feed them with snacks. I started with 10 students and today I have over 150 students.

It doesn’t take a lot of money to start having an influence on people, she continued. “I empowered certain sets of women in my community with 20,000, and asked them to pay back 5,000 monthly for 4 months in order to offer the opportunity to another set, and they did.
Erelu Ngozi Adeleke, the governor of Osun State’s wife, reaffirmed her commitment to uplifting women in her message of goodwill, encouraging the queens to contact her whenever they need anything to help them accomplish the aforementioned objectives.
