Peter Okoye says celebrities cannot save Nigeria alone, urging collective responsibility to address governance, insecurity and economic hardship

Nigerian singer and former member of the defunct P-Square duo, Peter Okoye, also known as Mr P, has said that celebrities alone do not have the capacity to rescue Nigeria from its worsening governance, security and economic challenges.

Peter Okoye celebrities cannot save Nigeria remarks came during a recent interview with Wazobia FM Lagos, where the musician responded to growing public expectations for entertainers to take a leading role in speaking against national issues.

Mr P stated that meaningful change in the country would require collective responsibility from all citizens rather than pressure placed solely on public figures in the entertainment industry.

In his words, he acknowledged the privilege of personal security but stressed that many Nigerians do not have the same protection or comfort, making the situation a shared national concern.

“I apologise for saying I won’t concern myself with Nigeria’s challenges anymore. I may have security agencies guiding me but not everyone can afford it. This is our country, it is only us who can bring positive changes,” he said.

The singer further emphasised that while he agrees the government has failed in several areas, the responsibility to demand and achieve change should not rest on celebrities alone.

“However, celebrities alone can’t save Nigeria. All those clamouring for celebrities to speak up against bad governance should redirect their energy,” he added.

Mr P’s comments have reignited ongoing debate about the role of entertainers in political and social advocacy, particularly in a country where public figures are often expected to influence national conversations.
