Ogun State prepares for the 22nd National Sports Festival, showcasing upgraded venues like the MKO Abiola Stadium, set to boost tourism and the economy
Ogun State is on track to host the 22nd National Sports Festival, with Governor Dapo Abiodun reaffirming the state’s preparedness following an extensive inspection of key venues.
The governor’s tour on Thursday, which focused on various sports hubs, confirmed that final touches had been made to the facilities, ensuring they meet the highest standards for both the festival and future events.
The facilities inspected include the MKO Abiola International Stadium, the Olympic-sized swimming pool, tennis courts, handball courts, and the Alake Sports Centre in Abeokuta.
Governor Abiodun expressed confidence in Ogun’s readiness, noting that the newly upgraded sports facilities were designed not only to host the festival but also to accommodate future national and international competitions.
A major highlight of the state’s preparations is the MKO Abiola International Stadium, which is undergoing significant renovations.
The stadium has already attracted international attention, securing the hosting rights for the 2026 Under-20 African Athletics Championship, thanks to its newly installed high-quality tracks.
The governor also outlined plans to ensure the stadium’s exclusivity for sporting events, with a new pavilion being constructed to accommodate non-sporting activities, such as political rallies, parties, and national celebrations.
“All non-sporting events will now be held at the new pavilion, while the stadium remains strictly for sports,” Governor Abiodun stated.
In a move to further enhance the stadium’s stature, he also announced plans to officially rename it the MKO Abiola Sporting Complex, cementing its transformation into a world-class sports facility.
Governor Abiodun also highlighted the significant economic and tourism benefits the festival will bring to Ogun State.
With over 15,000 visitors expected, the festival is set to generate a substantial economic boost, particularly in sectors like transport, hospitality, and tourism.
Ogun is also enhancing major tourist attractions, including the iconic Olumo Rock, to ensure visitors enjoy a memorable experience.
“This festival will generate significant economic activity across the state,” the governor remarked. “The ripple effects will be strongly felt, benefiting local businesses, hotels, and service providers.”
Concluding his remarks, Governor Abiodun reiterated that Ogun State’s investment in sports infrastructure is among the best in Nigeria.
He described the festival as a crucial platform for talent discovery and national sports development, further solidifying the state’s commitment to nurturing world-class athletes.
