The Asian Film Festival in Abuja strengthens Nigeria-China ties, fostering artistic collaboration and cultural diplomacy through cinema.

The Federal Government of Nigeria has praised the 6th Asian Film Festival, hosted at the China Cultural Centre in Abuja, as a vital platform for fostering cultural diplomacy and artistic collaboration between Nigeria and Asian nations, particularly China.

The festival underscores the role of cinema in promoting mutual understanding, with its opening ceremony drawing attention to the creative industry’s potential for economic growth.

Raphael Obi Oraeluno, Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, Tourism, and the Creative Economy, highlighted the significance of cultural exchange.

“Cultural exchange in the film industry not only deepens ties but also creates avenues for economic growth.

Promoting our cultural industries leads to job creation, supports local economies, and enhances cultural heritage tourism,” Oraeluno stated.

Oraeluno also called for policies to strengthen partnerships between Nigeria and China, noting that platforms like the Asian Film Festival provide a stage for emerging filmmakers to tell their stories.

“Each film presented at this festival is a dialogue of perspectives that fosters reflection, empathy, and cross-cultural understanding,” he added.

Yang Jianxing, Director of the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria, emphasized the event’s role in strengthening ties between Asia and Nigeria.

“The festival builds a bridge, helping us share stories that reflect the unique traditions, values, and creativity of Asia,” he said.

The centerpiece of this year’s festival was the screening of the Chinese film Monster Hunt. The fantasy-themed movie combines humor, action, and cultural elements, showcasing Chinese Kung Fu while addressing profound questions about human nature.

Jianxing concluded, “This festival celebrates teamwork, shared spirit, and the value of learning from each other to build a community with a shared future.”

With its blend of cultural exchange and cinematic excellence, the Asian Film Festival continues to promote international collaboration while enriching Nigeria’s creative landscape.
