Abia backs Ikeji Aro Festival for UNESCO recognition as the government pushes to reposition the state as a global tourism hub

Abia backs Ikeji Aro Festival in its quest to redefine the state’s image globally and promote cultural tourism.

The state government, through the Ministry of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, announced its support for the annual cultural celebration while pushing for the festival’s inscription on the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

Hon. Dr. Math Ekwuribe, Commissioner for Arts, Culture and Creative Economy, disclosed this in Umuahia during a meeting with the Ikeji Aro Festival Planning Committee.

He explained that Governor Alex Otti’s administration is committed to leveraging Abia’s heritage to attract global attention, investment, and tourism.

“The Otti administration is determined to use culture and heritage to reposition Abia as a global tourism destination,” Ekwuribe said.

The Ikeji Aro Festival, celebrated by the Arochukwu people, is one of the most prestigious traditional festivals in Igboland, renowned for its rituals, dances, and communal bonding.

By seeking UNESCO recognition, the Abia government aims to preserve the festival, boost cultural pride, and place Abia on the international tourism map.
