Tems has been announced as the only Nigerian performer at the star-studded Obama event marking the official opening of the Obama Presidential Center in Chicago alongside Stevie Wonder, John Legend and other global icons

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Tems is set to grace the stage at the grand opening ceremony of the Obama Presidential Center, performing alongside an elite list of international music legends including Stevie Wonder, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Bono, Bruce Springsteen, Christina Aguilera, Common and Marc Anthony.

The Obama Foundation confirmed Tems as the only Nigerian artist on the star-studded lineup for today’s high-profile event at the Center’s John Lewis Plaza in Chicago.

The ceremony, which is being livestreamed globally, celebrates democracy, culture, service and hope.

Obama Foundation CEO Valerie Jarrett described the occasion as unique. “This Grand Opening ceremony will be unlike any other, filled with music, performances, and hope,” she said.

Former First Lady Michelle Obama emphasised the centre’s importance as a transformative hub for education, leadership and community engagement on Chicago’s South Side.

The Presidential Center opens to the public tomorrow, 19 June, coinciding with Juneteenth weekend celebrations.

This prestigious invitation represents another major milestone in Tems’ meteoric international rise.

The Lagos-born artist first captured global attention in 2022 when she became the first African woman to top the Billboard Hot 100 as a featured artist on Future and Drake’s “Wait For U”. That same year, she performed at the FIFA World Cup closing ceremony in Qatar.
