Governor Makinde launches Oyo tourism book, reaffirming plans to grow the state’s economy through culture, heritage and tourism development
Oyo tourism book has become a new symbol of Governor Seyi Makinde’s renewed commitment to economic expansion through culture and tourism development.
The book, entitled Know Oyo State, was launched on Wednesday at the University College Hospital in Ibadan during a public event attended by key dignitaries and stakeholders in the cultural and political space of Oyo State.
Governor Makinde said the state had already made considerable progress in his first term by prioritising agribusiness and infrastructure.
He explained that his administration had now added tourism and solid minerals to the strategic economic agenda, noting that these sectors were already showing signs of delivering tangible returns.
He praised the author of the book, Prince Dotun Oyelade, who currently serves as the Commissioner for Information and Orientation.
The governor described the publication as a valuable resource that would enhance Oyo’s visibility among tourists and highlight the state’s historical and cultural wealth.
“Tourists will not come without knowing something about where they are going,” Makinde said.
“This book and the cultural exhibits it documents can serve as guides and inspiration, even from places like the Ladoke Akintola International Airport where visitors will first arrive.”
Makinde lauded Oyelade for his long-standing contribution to the administration, including his pivotal role during both Omituntun 1.0 and 2.0.
He then unveiled the book and purchased ten copies with a donation of N10 million, urging that the publication be widely distributed across the state’s 33 local governments.
The governor added that the state’s decision to explore areas of comparative advantage beyond agriculture was key to deepening its development goals.
By focusing on culture, tourism and minerals, he argued, the government was diversifying the economic base in ways that would promote inclusive growth.
In his remarks, Prince Oyelade said the idea for the book was conceived as far back as 2012 and was aimed at showcasing the uniqueness of Oyo State.
He expressed gratitude that the project had finally come to life under the present administration and reiterated the book’s educational and cultural relevance.
The occasion drew high-profile guests including the Deputy Governor, Barr. Abdulraheem Bayo Lawal, former Military Governor of Old Oyo State, General Oladayo Popoola (rtd), and the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Abimbola Owoade, among others.
The Alaafin described Know Oyo State as a cultural identity document that would serve generations and elevate the understanding of the state’s heritage. Other guests hailed it as a monumental achievement and an encyclopaedic work on Oyo’s history and people.
Governor Makinde concluded his remarks by encouraging all residents to support cultural development and actively participate in building a thriving tourism economy. With initiatives like this book, Oyo State is positioning itself as a hub for heritage-driven growth.
