The Ogun State Government has announced the temporary closure of the renowned Olumo Rock Tourist Complex, effective today, Monday, April 14, 2025. This closure is to facilitate extensive renovation works and crucial safety upgrades at the iconic site.
The announcement was made public through a press statement issued by the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Honourable Sesan Fagbayi.
In the statement, the Commissioner underscored that this move forms part of the state government’s wider initiatives aimed at significantly boosting tourism and diligently preserving the rich cultural heritage within Ogun State.
“As part of efforts to boost tourism and preserve cultural assets across the State, the Ogun State Government will begin the renovation and facelift of the Olumo Rock Tourist Complex which will lead to temporary closure of the site from Monday, April 14, 2025,” the official statement read.
Honourable Fagbayi revealed the significant popularity of Olumo Rock, noting that the site welcomes over 70,000 visitors annually. He emphasised that such a prominent landmark deserves a modern and safe environment that befits its esteemed status as a major tourist attraction.
“This development is part of a broader commitment to revamp one of our most iconic tourist destinations, improve visitors’ experience, and ensure safety measures during the renovation,” the Commissioner added.
The Ogun State Government extended its apologies for any inconvenience that the temporary closure may cause to the public. They also provided an assurance that further updates regarding the progress of the renovation works will be communicated as they proceed.
Olumo Rock, situated in the heart of Abeokuta, remains one of Nigeria’s most frequently visited cultural landmarks. The site holds immense historical significance within Yoruba culture and carries profound spiritual importance for many.
