Ekene festival sexual violence claims debunked by James Ibori, who says viral reports misrepresent Urhobo and Isoko cultural traditions

Former Delta State Governor James Ibori has dismissed allegations linking the Ekene festival to acts of sexual violence, stating that the Ekene festival sexual violence claims circulating online are misleading and do not reflect the cultural practices of Urhobo and Isoko communities.

The clarification follows a viral video reportedly showing incidents of violence against women during a traditional festival in Ozoro, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State.

The footage sparked widespread outrage and prompted public debate over the nature of the event and its cultural context.

James Ibori, who governed Delta State for eight years, said he had never encountered any festival of such a nature within Urhobo land, describing the reports as inaccurate and potentially harmful.

He emphasised that consultations with traditional authorities in Ozoro indicated that the alleged event was not officially sanctioned.

According to the former governor, proper procedures were not followed, as custodians of tradition were not consulted before the event reportedly took place.

He stressed that legitimate cultural festivals require the involvement and approval of recognised traditional institutions.

James Ibori cautioned against generalising the actions of a few individuals to entire ethnic groups, noting that it would be unfair to associate the conduct seen in the viral footage with the broader Urhobo and Isoko communities.

He described such narratives as damaging and capable of distorting public perception.

He also specifically addressed claims linking the Ekene festival to inappropriate activities, firmly rejecting suggestions that the festival involves any form of misconduct.

He maintained that festivals in Urhobo and Isoko societies are traditionally rooted in heritage, spirituality and shared moral values.

The former governor further commended security agencies for intervening in the matter, noting that ongoing investigations would help establish the facts and clarify the circumstances surrounding the incident.

He expressed confidence that the probe would bring an end to misinformation and provide clarity on what transpired.
