Olota Cup Opening receives strong praise as the 2025 season launches in Otta with a renewed commitment to youth development and sports excellence
His Majesty Professor Adeyemi Obalanlege, the Olota of the Ancient and Paramount Ottaland, Awori Kingdom, formally launched the 2025 Olota Cup Opening on Monday at Bells University Stadium, Otta, expressing firm confidence in the tournament’s growing role in youth development across the community.
The ceremony on 24 November drew traditional rulers, senior academics, security officials and community figures, reflecting the competition’s expanding relevance.
Professor Obalanlege commended the organising committee chaired by Mr Olaniyi Akinbode, Chief Executive Officer and Publisher of Travellers Network Magazine, for what he described as admirable dedication to strengthening the Olota Cup and the Olota Marathon Competition.
Professor Jeremiah Ojediran, Vice Chancellor of Bells University of Technology, attended alongside ACP Olusola Oladele, the Otta Area Commander.
Also present were Mr Taiwo representing Oba Samuel Ojugbele, the Onilogbo of Ilogbo Asowo; Oba Clement Akinyemi, the Ajana of Ijana Otta; Aare Surv. Segun Osifeso, the Aare Atunluse of Aworiland; and Mr Lamidi Tafa, Registrar of Bells University.
Prince Jamiu Komolafe, Baale of Ipamesan Oke-Otta, was also in attendance.
In a moment that resonated with spectators, Professor Obalanlege urged pupils to regard the competition as a pathway to excellence rather than a routine contest.
He encouraged players to demonstrate unity, discipline and ambition, noting that the tournament has become a powerful platform for young athletes hoping to pursue professional careers.
The opening fixtures set an energetic tone. Khafifat School defeated Scholars School two to nil in the female category, while Bells School secured a two to nil victory over Scholars School in the male match.
A formal statement from Prince Adeyemi Sulaimon Olusesi, Principal Secretary to His Majesty, acknowledged the monarch’s unwavering support and credited his visionary leadership with elevating sports as a tool for community development.
