lubadan declares the Sarkin Sasa title unrecognised under Ibadan Chieftaincy Law, reaffirming the authority of the Baale of Sasa land

The Olubadan of Ibadanland, His Imperial Majesty Oba (Dr) Owolabi Olakulehin (Ige Olakulehin I), has officially declared that the title of Sarkin Sasa is not recognised under the Ibadan Traditional Chieftaincy Law, affirming that it holds no official status within the region.

This declaration was made by the Olubadan-in-Council during a meeting at the Olubadan Palace, Oke Aremo, Ibadan, on Monday. In a statement released by the Chief Press Secretary to the Olubadan, Chief Olugbemiga Ayoade, the Council confirmed that the law recognises only the Baale of Sasa land in Akinyele Local Government Area and not any other titleholder.

“The individual recognised as the Baale of Sasa land is Chief Akinade Ajani Amusa, who remains the accredited representative of the Olubadan of Ibadanland,” the statement noted.

The Olubadan also made it clear that anyone residing in Sasa land is under the authority of Chief Amusa. “It is important to show respect to Chief Amusa as the Baale of Sasa land. Any disobedience to his authority will be considered an affront to the Olubadan stool and will incur serious sanctions,” the monarch warned.

This declaration follows an incident during the 8th-day Fidau prayer for the late Alhaji Haruna Maiyasin Kastina on March 8, 2025, when the ceremony in Sasa unexpectedly turned into a turbaning event for the late Kastina’s son, Ciroma, as the new Sarkin Sasa—without the Olubadan’s approval.

The Olubadan’s statement serves to reaffirm his leadership and control over the traditional authority in Ibadan, specifically in the Sasa area, and to maintain the integrity of the Ibadan chieftaincy system.
